Some thoughts
I used to pray every night, go to church every week, and read bits of the Bible on occasion. Gradually, I got out of these habits — not so much out of disillusionment or resentment towards religion, just a general slippage, a shifting of focus. And yes, in the time that followed, something about the way I believed changed, too. Sometimes it makes me sad, and yet it also makes me mildly uncomfortable to think about going back to the way it was before.
This isn’t very funny stuff for a blog named for a Monty Python joke, is it? Maybe I’ll get to the funny stuff later. Mostly, it just seemed like an amusing name for a blog where I intend to write about faith, theology, and the Bible. Well, amusing to me, anyway, and to be frank, this blog is (for now, at least) more for me than for you.
I want to read the rest of the Bible, to reread stuff I read when I was younger and I knew less than I know now, and to reflect on it in writing. I want to keep track of all the little stories and sermons and quotes I come across that make me think, “Hey, I’ll have to remember that for the next time I am wondering if modern life is really just a vast chasm of meaninglessness punctuated by occasional root beer floats and episodes of Lost.“ And I know I’m more likely to do these things if I write about them online than if I just keep a journal, even if nobody’s really paying attention. That’s just how I write.
I went to church today for the first time in a while, and it was a good sermon. I left a note asking if the reverend would mind sharing a copy of it with me. Maybe I’ll remember enough to write something about it later even without a copy, but here’s to hoping that this post establishes enough momentum to lead to a second.
